A sturdy handcrafted wooden clock, made of quality hardwood and crafted to resemble an ancient standing memorial rune stone from the Uppsala region of Sweden, circa 9th-10th century. Well suited for the casual admirer of ancient art or avid collector of Viking-Age history. This is the first of a series of artistic replica clocks representing the many runestones found throughout Scandinavia and northern Europe; each clock created will stand alone as a unique, heirloom quality piece of functional art.
This clock is READY TO SHIP; the pictures are of the actual runestone clock you shall receive upon ordering.
A clock crafted from a block of solid quality poplar hardwood, approx. 13" tall x 7" wide x 1.5" thick, shaped, carved and decorated to resemble an ancient Scandinavian standing runestone, or memorial stone. All artwork is done by hand utilizing pyrography, the art of wood-burning. The clock is cut, shaped, and carved by hand as well. There are many beautiful and fine details in the design on this clock; an expansion and embellishment of the original artwork carved in the ancient granite stone. All artwork is protected by a satin lacquer, which will not yellow with age or allow the burned detail to fade with time. The clock hands and hour pips are brass, and the clock movement is a 'AA' battery powered analog type, very reliable and accurate.
This particular clock is an artistically-detailed replica of Runestone U480, found originally in Tagsta, Uppland, Sweden. The wood has been cut to the shape of the actual runestone, and the edges have been carved and stained to resemble stone. The runes in the ribbon are the actual runes found on the stone, and read (in Old Norse) "HolmgæiR ok Gunni letu ræisa stæin þenna æftiR Sota, faður sinn", translated - "HolmgæiR and Gunni had this stone raised in memory of Sota, their father".
